ChatGPT's Intelligent UI builds calculators inside the chat, and SaaS lead-gen tools are in its path

GPT-6's new Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT generate working calculators and charts on the spot, putting a staple of B2B SaaS content marketing in direct competition with the chatbot itself.

OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 to ChatGPT on October 7, paired with a new feature called Intelligent UI that lets the chatbot decide, response by response, whether to answer in plain text or construct a working tool inside the conversation: a calculator, a chart, a form, even a short game.

What changed

Intelligent UI is not a toggle a user switches on. GPT-6 is trained to pick the layout of each response based on the question, producing buttons, forms and interactive charts when they fit better than a paragraph, according to Search Engine Journal. OpenAI's own examples, reported by TechCrunch, include a savings calculator, a bill splitter, a bicycle mechanics diagram and a multi-day hiking itinerary rendered as a map. OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan told reporters that ChatGPT has been "predominantly a text-based interface" until now, and that "the most helpful answers aren't just text."

Rollout day was October 7, and the paid tiers — Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise — got GPT-6 first, with Free and Go-tier accounts following a day later. Two different underlying models power that first wave: Sol handles the paid seats, while Luna takes over for Free and Go. One thinking level, Pro, sits outside Intelligent UI entirely for now, as do older desktop apps. Users can dial back the volume of visuals in settings, and on the enterprise tier, whether a seat sees the feature at all depends on how the account's admin has configured it, per Search Engine Journal. A separate speed claim from OpenAI: for questions that trigger a web search, GPT-6 Instant now begins its response with roughly a 44% shorter delay than GPT-5.6 Instant needed, and the model is said to judge more accurately when a search is actually warranted.

This is not OpenAI's first step toward a less text-bound ChatGPT. Per ChatGPT's own release notes, as cited by Search Engine Journal, the product already had interactive charts since June and step-by-step interactive modules spanning over 70 STEM subjects since March. Intelligent UI generalizes that pattern to any question GPT-6 judges fit for a non-text layout. In a demo described by TechCrunch, OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan showed a prompt like the one below returning a set of diagrams built on the spot.

Who it affects

Search Engine Journal's own analysis flags the part that should worry software marketers: calculators and converters built on generic public inputs and standard formulas are exactly the content Google's AI Overviews began replicating in August, and now ChatGPT can generate the same thing natively, without sending anyone to a results page or a landing page first. That matters because a working calculator is one of the most common lead-generation tactics in B2B SaaS content marketing — pricing calculators, ROI estimators, TCO comparisons, unit converters — each usually gated behind an email field or sitting on a page built specifically to rank and convert.

If a prospect can get the same calculation inside a ChatGPT conversation, the page built to capture that intent loses the visit, the email address, and the attribution entirely. Neither source reports how, or whether, ChatGPT credits the sites whose content informed a generated tool, chart or comparison the way it can cite a source in a plain-text answer with a Sources button — so a brand's framework or formula could end up inside a generated tool with no link back at all.

The enterprise admin gate cuts both ways for timing. A software company selling to large accounts, where ChatGPT access and feature rollout go through IT, likely has more runway before its buyers see generated calculators than a company whose prospects are individual ChatGPT Plus subscribers browsing on their own. That gap will not last — Search Engine Journal's reporting frames Intelligent UI as a global rollout, not a limited test — but it does mean the risk arrives unevenly across different buyer types, and a marketing team can use that gap to get ahead of it rather than react once the traffic is already gone.

What a software marketer should do differently

What to do

Audit which calculators and converters on your site run on public formulas and generic inputs — those are now replicable inside ChatGPT and AI Overviews alike. Rebuild the ones worth keeping around data a model can't see: a customer's own usage, billing history, CRM fields, or anything that sits behind a login.

  • List every gated tool or calculator in your content library and flag which ones rely only on public math
  • Prioritize rebuilding or repositioning tools that pull from proprietary or logged-in data over ones using open formulas
  • Track referral and form-fill trends on calculator pages separately from the rest of organic content, since this is where a drop would show first
  • Treat a generic calculator as commodity content now — the differentiator is the data behind it, not the math

None of this is a reason to tear down existing tools immediately. Intelligent UI is rolling out gradually, and OpenAI has not said how often it will build a calculator on demand versus favoring a cited text answer instead. But the direction matches what has already happened in organic search: content built to answer a generic, computable question is the first kind of content a model learns to generate on its own. The software marketers least exposed will be the ones whose interactive tools already depend on something only their own product can supply.
